One comment on “History Fireside Chats 6 – A Murder a Day: The Brighton Trunk Murders and the British Press

  1. A very interesting article. The police found the press very annoying as can be seen by an examination of the trunk murder files at Kew and Brighton. Although Sir Bernard’s powers may have been in decline, the police still held in him esteem; see Sharpe’s memoirs for one. The evidence here does not seem to necessarily point to the pathologist’s thinking an abortionist was at work in trunk murder 1 as there is no reference in his notes that there had been an abortion nor any attempt any such. As to the demands of the public, see also Orwell’s essay, The Decline of the English murder.
